For some reason porches were built all around our lovely city without first installing footings at the correct depth; 4ft below the finished grade height.

In most cases, it’s the steps which went without theses vital footings. Because not having them at the right depth, the structure becomes exposed to frost heaving which can cause cracking. This can only be fixed by removing the old steps & digging down to the correct depth then pouring new footings and being rebuild.
