When installing retaining walls, there are a few important rules that need to be followed in order for it to function right while standing the test of time.

Excavation needs to be a minimum 1ft below the bottom course and it’s good practice to be 12” wider than where the back face ends up. Digging lower allows room for a good gravel base creating great drainage, same for that of the width.

They always need a weeping tile placed at the bottom course to further help with drainage then filter cloth or weed protection needs to be installed against the back face to prevent anything from growing between the joints.
